Ok, so I recently (read: This morning), decided to start experimenting again with the rail design........
One thing I can tell you is that I do have a working design for a 4 way junction, thats beautifully smooth in it's operation and resets itself. Theoretically, if you have infinite redstone, you could expand it by linking them in series.
The bad news is.......well......look at 1/4 of the redstone circuitry required.

I guess its more than a quarter.
You note the sticky pistons next to the tracks? Those are hooked up to banks of a 1 wide T-flip flop (which I spent a month working on and then was very dissapointed to find out that they were nothing new).
The difficulty comes with the redstone wire cost to wire the buttons to the TFFs and the fact you need a timer system to reset it, which are always expensive, either in redstone or iron (if you use a minecart timer).

Its not practical but if you have creative and a lot of time, highly efficient and flawless in its execution of the task.

Do not mock my genius sir!

This is done entirely in vanilla (except the parts that aren't).
